Mankind has built many fantastic buildings
around the world, entire cities being erected on astounding territories.
Looking from the outside, we try to imagine how all these were possible when
life on Earth began. Shibam city,
often referred to as Shibam Hadhramaut in
Yemen, is part of the category of impressive constructions. The area is now renowned
for the dwellings built in the form of blocks in which live approximately 7,000
inhabitants.
The sun-dried mud high-rises reaching up to 7 storeys high
provided protection against the elements and was cracking for the city’s
defense. Shibam’s location as the convergence point of Asia, Africa, and Europe
which made it an important stop for traders going through the frankincense and
spice routes. Time after time, fresh layers of mud must be applied to the
scoured walls to keep the edifices strong and stable. It has been
declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
